Guinea Pig set up costs – how much do they cost?

Guinea Pigs · June 22, 2025

If you’re thinking about getting guinea pigs, you’re probably wondering how much they actually cost. This guide breaks down the initial setup expenses, monthly costs, and what you can expect in terms of ongoing care.

1. Cage/Enclosure

One of the best housing options for guinea pigs is a C&C grid cage. These modular grids click together and can be customized to suit your space. Prices usually range from £30 to £90.

Most cages sold in pet stores or online are too small. For two guinea pigs, aim for at least 5ft by 2ft, though bigger is always better. Males in particular can be more territorial, so they benefit from extra space.

2. Bedding

While some stores use wood shavings, which are inexpensive (around £10 per large bag), they can be dusty and difficult to clean. Since cleaning is a big part of guinea pig care, many owners prefer fleece liners.

Fleece liners cost around £50 each on average, but they’re reusable and easier to manage. Just shake out the waste, wash the liner, and wipe down the cage with a pet-safe cleaner.

3. Toys and Enrichment

Guinea pigs need a variety of toys to keep them stimulated. Chews, tunnels, and hideouts are great for preventing boredom.

Basic toys can cost between £1 and £5, while more elaborate enrichment items like tunnels can go up to £30.

4. Food

Hay should make up about 80% of a guinea pig’s diet. Timothy hay is a the best because it’s high in fibre. I usually spend around £20 a month on good-quality hay.

Fresh vegetables are also essential, especially since guinea pigs can’t produce their own vitamin C. I typically spend around £10 a month on veg.

Pellets and treats are a smaller part of their diet, but still important. A big bag of pellets can last a while. My go-to treats are from Science Selective, which cost about £3.95 per pack, but there are more affordable options too.

5. Vet Costs

Guinea pigs don’t need routine vaccinations, but it’s a good idea to register them with an exotic specialist vet for regular check-ups.

Some companies offer guinea pig insurance, which costs around £15 per month per pig. While that’s not cheap, it can help cover unexpected veterinary bills, especially as guinea pigs tend to live several years.

6. Price of Guinea Pigs

You might be able to adopt guinea pigs for free, although most rescues ask for a donation of around £50 per pig. If you’re buying from a pet store, expect to pay about £45 each.

Remember, guinea pigs are social animals and must be kept in pairs, so you’ll need to get at least two.

Estimated Initial Setup Cost

Here’s a rough breakdown of what you might spend when first getting guinea pigs:

  • Cage (C&C): £30 – £90
  • Fleece liners: £50+
  • Toys and enrichment: £5 – £30
  • Hay (initial supply): ~£20
  • Fresh veg and pellets: ~£10 – £15
  • Guinea pigs (x2): £90 – £100

Total estimated initial cost: around £200, depending on where you get your guinea pigs and how much you spend on the cage and accessories.
